Professor Sundari Anitha is Chair in Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield, UK since 2024, following academic appointments at the University of Lincoln, University of Leeds and the University of Central Lancashire.
Her research explores the problem of violence against women and girls (VAWG) at the intersection of gender, race, border and migration in diverse contexts including the UK, US and India; domestic violence and abuse, including dowry-related abuse, forced marriage, transnational marriage abandonment; gender-based violence in university communities; and (ii) the intersection of gender, race and ethnicity in employment relations; agency, and solidarity and industrial action by migrant workers. Anitha’s research draws upon qualitative research methods, including life history methods.
Professor Sundari Anitha has led and contributed to several national and international research projects funded by the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and the Nuffield Foundation.

In addition to her academic work, Professor Sundari Anitha has a strong background in practice, having previously managed a Women’s Aid refuge and served as a caseworker at Asha Projects, a London-based domestic abuse service for South Asian women. She currently serves on the boards of Southall Black Sisters, the Anti-Trafficking and Labour Exploitation Unit (ATLEU), and National Centre for Social Research. She also contributed as a research consultant on labour and resistance for Steve McQueen’s exhibition Resistance (Tate Modern, 2025).
She is a former Associate Editor of Women’s Studies International Forum and currently serves as co-editor of Families, Relationships & Society and previously served on the editorial boards of Violence Against Women and the British Journal of Criminology. Professor Sundari Anitha was a member of the Sociology sub-panel for REF2021 and is part of the ESRC Peer Review College.
Professor Anitha Sundari participated in the International Conference “Violence Against Women and Girls: Social Implications for Their Health and Future“, held at the University of Salerno on November 14 -15, 2023, under the scientific direction of Professor Giuseppina Cersosimo, contributing to the international dialogue on gender-based violence.
